The bottom packing ring never seats properly, the packing leaks too much and wears out the rotating shaft of the equipment. However, these are not problems as long as they are installed accurately, the best maintenance practices are followed and the operation is correct. Packing is ideal for many process applications. This article will help users install, operate and maintain packing like a professional.

After removing the packing ring that has exhausted its life and inspecting the stuffing box, the technician will cut and install the new packing ring. To do this, the size of the rotating shaft of the equipment - the pump - needs to be measured first.
To ensure the correct size of the packing, the person cutting the packing must use a mandrel that is the same size as the rotating shaft of the equipment. The mandrel can be easily made from materials available on site, such as old sleeves, pipes, steel rods or wooden rods. They can use tape to make the mandrel to the appropriate size. Once the mandrel is set, it is time to start cutting the packing. Follow these steps:
1. Wrap the packing tightly around the mandrel.
2. Using the first joint as a guide, cut the packing at an angle of about 45°. The packing ring should be cut so that the ends fit tightly when the packing ring is wrapped around the mandrel.
With the packing rings prepared, technicians can begin installation. Typically, the deep well vertical turbine pumps require five rings of packing and one seal ring. Proper seating of each ring of packing is important for reliable operation. To achieve this, more time is spent during the installation process. However, the benefits include less leakage, longer service life, and less maintenance.
As each ring of packing is installed, longer and shorter tools and ultimately the seal ring are used to fully seat each ring of packing. Stagger the joints of each ring of packing by 90°, starting at 12 o'clock, then 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock.
Also, ensure that the seal ring is in place so that flushing fluid enters the stuffing box. This is done by inserting a small object into the flushing port and feeling for the seal ring. When installing the fifth and final ring of packing, only the gland follower will be used. The installer should tighten the gland follower using 25 to 30 foot-pounds of torque. Then completely loosen the gland and allow the packing to relax for 30 to 45 seconds.
After this time has passed, tighten the gland nut finger-tight again. Start the unit and make adjustments as necessary. Leakage should be limited to 10 to 12 drops per minute per inch of sleeve diameter.

If the shaft of a গভীর ভাল উল্লম্ব টারবাইন পাম্প deflects, it will cause the compression packing to move and possibly damage. Shaft deflection is the slight bending of the pump shaft when the velocity of the impeller pushing the liquid is not equal at all points around the impeller.
Shaft deflection can occur due to unbalanced pump rotors, shaft misalignment, and pump operation away from the optimum efficiency point. This operation will cause premature packing wear and make it more difficult to control and use flushing fluid leakage. Adding a shaft stabilizing bushing may help reduce or eliminate this problem.
Process Changes and Stuffing Box Reliability
Any change in process fluid or flow rate will affect the stuffing box and the compression packing inside it. The stuffing box flushing fluid must be set and operated correctly to ensure that the packing remains clean and cool during operation. Knowing the pressure of the stuffing box and the equipment lines is the first step. Whether using a separate flushing fluid or pumping the fluid (if it is clean and free of particles), the pressure it enters the stuffing box is critical to proper operation and packing life. For example, if the user restricts pumping flow at any time with a drain valve, the stuffing box pressure will be affected and pumped liquid containing particles will enter the stuffing box and packing. Flushing pressure must be high enough to compensate for any extreme conditions that may occur during the operation of the deep well vertical turbine pump.
Flushing is more than just liquid flowing in from one side of the stuffing box and out the other side. It cools and lubricates the packing, thereby extending its life and minimizing shaft wear. It also keeps wear-causing particles out of the packing.

To maintain the reliability of the stuffing box, the flushing liquid must be controlled to keep the packing clean, cool and lubricated.
In addition, the force applied by the gland follower to the packing must be adjusted as needed. This means that if the leakage of the stuffing box is greater than 10 to 12 drops per minute per inch of sleeve diameter, the gland needs to be adjusted. The technician should adjust slowly until the correct leakage rate is achieved to ensure that the packing is not too tightly packed. When the gland can no longer be adjusted, it means that the packing life of the deep well vertical turbine pump has been exhausted and a new packing ring should be installed.
